Talking with Hellen

A blue painted island is the key feature of this kitchen.

Bentwood Luxury Kitchens: For the Modern Serenity project, where you used Harmoni cabinetry, what was your favorite element in the kitchen design?

Hellen Hsieh: One of my favorite aspects of the Modern Serenity kitchen design was the emphasis on functionality and the smooth flow between the kitchen and family room, which made the space ideal for both everyday living and entertaining. I also loved the versatility of the clear glass, which beautifully showcased the homeowner’s collection while adding visual interest and subtle separation. The eye-catching combination of painted blue and white cabinetry created a clean, fresh look that brought a sense of calm and elegance to the kitchen.

BLK: Your design included a stunning island. Tell us more about the defining details of this addition.

HH: The large island was a key feature in this kitchen. It was designed not just as a prep space, but as a gathering spot for the family to enjoy time together as their kids grow up. It offers ample seating, making it perfect for casual meals, homework sessions, or simply spending time together during busy days.

BLK: How was the use of color important in this particular design?

HH: The bold blue color of the island was chosen to bring personality and energy into the space. While the white cabinetry keeps the kitchen feeling bright and timeless, the blue adds a playful yet sophisticated contrast. It helps the island stand out as the heart of the kitchen, adding a sense of warmth and fun that reflects the spirit of the family.

BLK: In the Rustic Cottage project, you had a smaller space to work in. How did this affect your design plans? What challenges did you encounter?

HH: In the Rustic Cottage project, the original kitchen was confined to a small, enclosed space, which significantly limited functionality and flow. To address this, we relocated the kitchen to what was previously the living room, a larger area with better potential. One of the main challenges was removing the existing fireplace to make room for the new layout.

We also wanted to take full advantage of the home’s stunning Bay views, so we added a large window and thoughtfully positioned the sink and island seating to face it. This not only opened the space but also created a strong connection between the kitchen and the surrounding landscape.

Design Trends

BLK: How do you feel about current design trends? Is there anything in particular that speaks to you or influences your current designs?

HH: Open-concept design has expanded beyond just common areas. I’m seeing more bathrooms and bedrooms embracing natural light through features like skylights to create a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors. There’s also a growing interest among clients in using bold, playful color palettes to add drama and depth to a space. In my own work, I’ve been focusing on maximizing natural light during space planning to create interiors that feel bright, open, and welcoming.

BLK: What color palettes do you favor right now?

HH: I’m currently drawn to classic wood tones, particularly walnut and oak, for their warmth and timeless appeal. When the right project presents the opportunity, I’m also interested in exploring vintage-inspired color combinations that evoke a sense of history and character. These palettes can add depth and storytelling to a space while maintaining a refined aesthetic.

BLK: Your work is a form of artistic expression. Do you have a design intention when working on a large project beyond pleasing the client, of course?

HH: Absolutely. Beyond meeting the client’s needs, I always strive to create a space that feels intentional and cohesive. I focus on a harmonious color palette based on color theory, the overall functionality of the space, and how the client truly wants to use it day-to-day. I also consider long-term maintenance-designing with materials and finishes that are both beautiful and practical. My goal is to create environments that not only reflect the client’s lifestyle but also stand the test of time.

Luxury Cabinetry Choices

BLK: When planning a kitchen or bath project, what do you look for in luxury cabinetry?

HH: When selecting luxury cabinetry, I prioritize the quality and durability of the materials, along with fine craftsmanship, particularly in unique door styles and finishes. Customization is also key, both in terms of design flexibility and functional layout. Equally important is the reliability of the brand and its ability to provide timely and responsive customer support throughout the project.

BLK: How do the Bentwood and Harmoni cabinetry brands meet your needs and fit into your designs?

HH: I truly enjoy working with both Bentwood and Harmoni cabinetry. Their craftsmanship is consistently of a high standard, and they’ve proven to be reliable in meeting delivery timelines, which is crucial for keeping projects on track. Additionally, the brand’s customer service stands out-our rep is highly responsive and solution-oriented, making the entire process smooth and efficient from start to finish.

BLK: What would you say to clients on the fence about hiring an Interior Designer?

HH: Remodeling can be a very stressful process, especially when homeowners try to manage it on their own. Hiring an interior designer can save a significant amount of time and energy. Beyond assisting with material selection, interior designers provide expert guidance on space planning and help ensure the project stays on schedule. Additionally, they play a crucial role in identifying and preventing costly mistakes early on, ultimately protecting your investment and delivering a more successful outcome. They also help homeowners bring together various design elements harmoniously and cohesively.
