When a new residential development by Sulo Development broke ground in Chicago’s exciting West Loop neighborhood, a unique opportunity to purchase one of the 28 luxury residences was presented to the Chicago real estate marketplace. Hayden West Loop was wildly successful with home buyers embracing the large open floor plans, luxury amenities including custom cabinetry by Bentwood, amazing city views, and Industrial style.  Alan Barker, Interior Architect of Lamar Johnson Collaborative, was working with one of the penthouse owners looking to personalize their space with a very elevated Industrial Chic theme. Soon Steve Karp, Design Director at Bentwood of Chicago, was brought in to collaborate with Alan and the homeowners on this amazing unit project.

A Fashionable Cook’s Kitchen

The client is an accomplished home chef who loves to cook, entertain, and happens to have amazing style and taste—pinch us! Embracing the mixed metal palette was a huge opportunity to identify key areas perfect for a ‘jewelry like’ focus.

How about a jewelry box of Le Creuset Cookware behind glass front cabinets with mirror polish stainless steel frames? The polished metal contrast against the polished concrete floors gives Industrial a new level of Chic.

A custom spice drawer was created to house favorite tins and keep everything organized in the cook work zone. Cooking Utensils are also stored neatly in drawers for convenient access and kitchen organization.

This custom confectioner table would delight any serious baker!  Extra thick Calcutta Gold marble top is perfect for rolling out dough and the shelves below hold all the essential baking equipment and tools.  The matching mirror polish stainless table legs give that extra something to this specialized piece of kitchen furniture.

Making a Statement with Luxury Appliances

As a home chef, professional appliances are a very personal choice.   Here is a great example of integrating several brands into a successful kitchen design that meet both function and aesthetic.

Some of our clients ‘favorite things’ offered defining features worth sharing:

The two BlueStar Ovens offer the French doors and accommodate a full-size bake sheet.

Glass Front True Residential Refrigerators not only look great in this industrial kitchen but offer premium performance, capacity, and organization.

Wolf Cook Top allows for excellent heat control and performance.

Subzero Freezer Drawer and Ice maker are high performing essentials.

The Kitchen Island – Essential Function

We love this kitchen island because it is ALL about the function and casual entertaining!  On the front of the island open shelving was designed for access to essential serving ware and makes setting up buffet serving a snap.

On the working side of the island, a large Galley Workstation™ with Double Galley Taps shown in gunmetal finish make clean up quick and organized! The Cove Dishwasher and double pull out trash have integrated custom cabinetry panels to show off distressed rift white oak cabinetry in keeping with Industrial style.

Not Your Average Butler’s Pantry

With the Open Loft Floor plan, custom metal doors were designed for separating spaces while adding a repeating architectural design element throughout the entire Penthouse

We love how the client’s antique printing table integrates into the butler’s pantry—another large landing space perfect for entertaining. A dark navy paint was selected for the pantry to give a handsome complement to the custom brass hardware.

And we are back to ‘talking jewelry’ with this custom polished brass bar shelving! This gorgeous shelving flows across the entire back wall and up to the ceiling providing generous storage and accessibility.

Note: extra support and engineering were absolutely required here!

Personalizing Loft Space for Industrial Chic

We were so proud to be a part of such a unique Chicago project working with a team of innovative professionals that understood personalized luxury and home owners who said YES! Having fun with a mix of  metals, wood, and stone materials showed how Industrial Chic could be interpreted into another refined level of luxury.
